Kuala Lumpur: A 17-year-old boy who reportedly dropped out of school to work and support his parents is facing financial hardship following his father's death from cancer.
Philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, said the teenager had stopped his studies to care for his parents and used his earnings to help pay for his father's medical treatment, according to a recent Facebook post.
Following his father's death, Kuan said the family was left with an unpaid hospital bill of about RM20,000 and was also facing eviction after falling behind on rent due to mounting medical expenses.
He said the teenager had even asked whether the remaining RM70 in his late father's MySARA account could be used to buy food for himself and his mother.
Kuan has since appealed for public assistance for the family, including RM9,400 to cover funeral-related expenses such as the coffin and a columbarium niche.
