Air India plane diverted after hijacking alert during flight from Frankfurt to Delhi

An Air India flight from Frankfurt to Delhi has been diverted to the city of Jaipur after a security alert for a suspected hijacking was issued as it entered Indian airspace, according to media reports.

The pilot reportedly transmitted a 7500 squawk code, used internationally to indicate hijacking or unlawful interference. Indian media reports said the pilot contacted air traffic control and sought permission to land at the nearest airport as a precaution.

Flight AI2030, operated by a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, was moved to an isolation bay upon landing in Jaipur at 9.45am, with security personnel and members of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) inspecting the aircraft as well as passengers’ luggage. The aircraft has since been cleared by the authorities, and passengers are expected to board soon, DGCA sources told the Hindustan Times.

A passenger named Swasti Rao posted on X: “Everything is fine. After protocol re-checks of the aircraft and the passengers, boarded the same flight that was diverted to Jaipur (because the pilot had activated hijack code), hopefully will depart for delhi soon.”

Both the pilots were de-boarded in line with security protocol, while a team from the National Security Guard (NSG) – India’s federal counter-terrorism and special operations force – in Delhi was placed on standby, reported CNN-News 18.

All passengers and crew members were safely evacuated and taken to an emergency holding area at the airport terminal, according to reports. The number of passengers on board was not immediately clear.

Assistant commissioner of police Shiv Dayal said airport authorities had alerted the police about the emergency landing following the alert, reported the Times of India. Officials said they were still investigating the circumstances that triggered the pilots’ actions.

“It was a hijacking rumour, not a bomb threat. It’s too early to comment officially on the matter. An investigation is underway,” an airport official told local daily Hindustan Times on condition of anonymity.

Air India is yet to issue a statement on the incident.

The incident comes a day after flight operations at Nuremberg Airport were suspended after a Corendon Airlines flight travelling from Corfu transmitted a 7500 squawk code.

German Eurofighter jets were scrambled to escort the aircraft after air traffic control lost radio contact with the cockpit between 8.15am and 8.28am UTC.

Corendon Airlines confirmed that the hijacking signal was transmitted in error due to a radio system malfunction, reassuring the public that passengers were never in danger.

Last month, an alleged hijacking incident on board a flight to Israel unfolded roughly two and a half hours into Flydubai Flight FZ1073.

As the Boeing 737 crossed into Jordanian airspace, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar was attacked by the plane’s co-pilot in an apparent attempt to crash the airliner, officials said. The aircraft plunged 14,000ft in less than 30 seconds.

Despite bleeding heavily after sustaining multiple severe stab wounds, Cpt Machchhar was able to hit the cockpit's door release mechanism before collapsing, Israeli officials said. Several passengers then charged forward to breach the unlocked flight deck, joining crew members to physically restrain the attacker on the floor. An off-duty pilot who was travelling on board the plane carried out a safety emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
