AirAsia Philippines to retire old aircraft

AirAsia Philippines is gradually retiring its older aircraft as part of its fleet modernization program.

Its Malaysia-based parent company, AirAsia X (AirAsia Group), announced that it is phasing out its older, less efficient fleet in favor of the Airbus A321LR, which is more economical and cost-effective.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Group, said the company plans to introduce the Airbus A220 in the future. To boost efficiency, AirAsia Philippines is optimizing its flights and fleet strategy while preparing for these aircraft deliveries.

The upcoming addition of the Airbus A220 introduces a smaller, highly efficient aircraft tier. This gives the Group the flexibility to optimally match aircraft size with demand on regional routes.

"We are going to get the A220s by the end of next year, and these aircraft will be deployed in the Philippines. We are currently reviewing our network strategy, and over the next two or three months, we will determine the routes, deployment plans, and opportunities that will support our long-term growth in the Philippine market," Lingam said in a statement.

AirAsia Group is executing its planned growth strategy with full operational focus. It is restoring aircraft frequencies and capacity across its network, with full capacity expected in August 2026.

The Group said that it is actively engaged with governments and partners to further advance a more competitive cost environment that ultimately benefits travelers.

"Air travel and tourism remain the economic backbone of many Asean countries, which is why all stakeholders across the aviation and tourism industry must play their part in ensuring costs remain affordable as the sector continues to recover. This includes avoiding increases in airport levies, taxes and charges over the next one to two years, as this will be critical to sustaining demand, improving connectivity and supporting economic recovery across the region," Lingam said.
