MANILA, Philippines — Akbayan Party on Friday condemned the death threats against Sen. Risa Hontiveros and called on authorities to immediately identify, investigate and prosecute those responsible, warning that intimidation has no place in a democratic society.
The party said democracy depends on the free exchange of ideas and that political differences should be resolved through peaceful dialogue, debate and democratic processes, not through fear, violence or threats to life.
Akbayan also warned against normalizing death threats, whether they come from public officials or private individuals, saying a culture of intimidation discourages people from speaking out, silences criticism and undermines democracy.
“Senator Risa has consistently stood for human rights, truth, and accountability, and has often been the target of harassment and disinformation,” the party said, adding that it stands firmly behind Hontiveros and will continue defending democratic space where dissent is protected and public officials can perform their duties without fear.
Akbayan Party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña likewise condemned the threats.
“This is the consequence of our leaders being allowed to carelessly spew threats against other people. Authorities cannot allow or dismiss these kinds of threats. Violence, whether through words or actions, has no place in a democracy. Sen. Risa has been a constant target of harassment and intimidation because of her steadfast work in fighting for truth and accountability. No amount of threats will deter her,” Cendaña said.
