Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh is not harbouring resentment towards Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and remains committed to leading the Youth wing forward, according to Umno Wanita executive council member Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Umno General Assembly on Jan 14, Nurulhidayah dismissed suggestions that Akmal was sulking following his earlier indication that he might step aside from his position. She said the relationship between Akmal and the party president should instead be viewed as one grounded in mutual respect and guidance, likening it to a constructive dynamic between a senior leader and a younger figure within the party.

She expressed confidence that the recent meeting between Akmal and Zahid took place in a calm and positive atmosphere, adding that Akmal was fully aware of his responsibilities and the direction he intends to take in guiding the Youth wing. According to her, Akmal remains focused on providing firmer leadership and ensuring that the wing continues to move in a constructive and disciplined manner.

Nurulhidayah also conveyed her belief that the challenges currently faced by Akmal would ultimately strengthen him as a leader. She noted that individuals striving for improvement are often subjected to intense mental and emotional tests, and described these pressures as part of a natural process of growth. In her assessment, Akmal is navigating this phase well and is on track to emerge more resilient and capable than before.

Speculation over Akmal’s position arose after he publicly called for Umno to withdraw from the unity government, a stance that reportedly did not sit well with Zahid. This prompted Akmal to hint at relinquishing the posts he currently holds. However, on Jan 13, Akmal met Zahid and conveyed his views and intentions directly to the party president in an effort to clarify his position.

Zahid, who also serves as deputy prime minister, later stated that any decision regarding Akmal’s resignation or continued leadership would be announced by Akmal himself on Jan 14, placing the responsibility of communication firmly with the Youth chief.

Separately, Nurulhidayah sought to play down speculation surrounding the possibility of urgent or emergency motions being raised ahead of the Wanita and Puteri wing assemblies scheduled for Jan 15. She said there was no indication of extraordinary developments requiring immediate action.

Looking ahead, she said the 2026 Umno General Assembly is expected to outline a clearer and more positive direction for the party as it gears up for the 16th General Election. She added that delegates, particularly from the Pemuda and Puteri wings, are anticipated to submit proposals aimed at strengthening Umno’s position and readiness for the electoral challenge ahead.
