Umno Youth chief Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh has stood firm on his call to boycott KK Mart despite the store's apology for selling socks with the word Allah. Despite police urging caution and not escalating the issue, Akmal remains defiant, particularly rebuffing DAP's Nga Kor Ming's warning that his reaction could backfire.
In response to Nga's caution, Akmal emphasized Umno's commitment to defending Islam, bumiputera, and the Malay royalty, stating that these principles will be upheld by Umno Youth regardless of the consequences.
Akmal further encouraged his supporters to persist with the boycott, asserting that the Muslim community's resolve would only strengthen in the face of opposition. This stance reflects his unwavering dedication to addressing what he perceives as disrespect towards religion and race.
Nga, however, criticized Akmal's approach, cautioning against the manipulation of racial and religious sentiments, which he deemed harmful and outdated. He urged Akmal to reconsider his actions, warning that such behaviour could contribute to Umno's electoral defeat.
The pressure on KK Mart intensified following Akmal's relentless campaign, despite the store's apology and explanation that the socks were overlooked by a supplier. Akmal's efforts prompted multiple police reports, leading to the opening of two investigation papers by the authorities.
The supplier of the socks, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, also issued an apology, acknowledging the need for greater care in sourcing products from overseas. The company clarified that the batch in question was procured from China and was sent to Malaysia by accident. They vowed to learn from their mistakes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In summary, Akmal's unwavering stance on the KK Mart issue reflects his commitment to defending religious and cultural sensitivities, despite criticism and warnings from political counterparts. The ongoing boycott demonstrates the persistence of Akmal and his supporters in addressing perceived affronts to religion and race, while also highlighting the complexities of navigating such sensitive issues in a multicultural society.
