Umno Youth Leader Dr Akmal Saleh recently stirred controversy by initiating calls for boycotts of KK Mart due to the controversial socks issue, urging people to conduct it maturely and without resorting to violence after the occurrences of two recent Molotov cocktail firebombing incidents at KK Mart outlets in Bidor, Perak, and Sungai Isap, Kuantan, Pahang and another incident happened in Kuching, Sarawak as reported in the news lately.
While his intentions may have been rooted in addressing certain sensitive grievances in a highly charged atmosphere for political motives, the provocative and irresponsible approach raises concerns about the potential consequences of such actions.
In the wake of Akmal Saleh's call for a boycott, three cases of bombings using Molotov cocktails and vandalism have been reported, indicating a worrying escalation of tensions.
While he may have intended for the boycott to gain publicity in the form of mass public protest campaign, the volatile nature of such situations can quickly spiral out of control, leading to violence and destruction.
One of the pitfalls of inciting mass boycotts harping on 2Rs issues is the risk of unintended consequences. While Akmal Saleh may have hoped to exert pressure on KK Mart through economic means, the actions of certain individuals can veer off course, leading to acts of violence and vandalism. This not only undermines the credibility of the boycott but also puts innocent lives and property at risk.
Moreover, calling for a boycott playing up on 2Rs without fully considering the potential ramifications can be likened to calling for war without being prepared to face its consequences. While he may have been motivated by a desire to inflict economic harm on the targeted convenience chain stores, the lack of foresight and planning can result in chaos and disorder.
It is essential for leaders like Akmal Saleh to recognize the power and influence they wield over the masses. With great power comes great responsibility, and advocating for boycotts or any form of protest carries a weighty burden. He must consider the potential negative impact of his controversial actions that influence the masses, ensuring that they do not inadvertently fuel violence or division within society.
While his hidden intention behind Akmal Saleh's call for a boycott may have been for publicity, opportunism and political motives, the approach to incite public sentiment causes public disorder and outrage that raises serious concerns about the potential consequences. Leaders must exercise caution and responsibility when advocating for mass actions, ensuring that they do not inadvertently incite violence or harm. Freedom of expression necessitates to adhering social responsibility, ethical behaviour and exercising restraint.
Instead of resorting to boycotts as a first course of action, leaders should explore alternative avenues for addressing grievances. This could involve engaging in dialogue with the concerned parties, or seeking mediation to address grievances in a peaceful and constructive manner.
It is only through thoughtful and constructive dialogue that meaningful change can be achieved without resorting to destructive means.
