UMNO Youth will convene a special general meeting on January 3, 2026, to deliberate the party’s future within the coalition government, marking a critical moment for the youth wing amid mounting internal tensions.
UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh announced that the gathering will take place at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre at 3pm and will carry the theme of determining whether UMNO should continue participating in the unity government or withdraw from it. The outcome of the discussion is expected to reflect grassroots sentiment and influence deliberations at the party’s top leadership level.
Akmal said the meeting is intended to provide an open platform for members who are committed to the party and prepared to voice their views candidly. He stressed that opinions expressed at the assembly would be formally brought to the UMNO Supreme Council for consideration, ensuring that grassroots concerns are not sidelined in strategic decision-making.
According to him, the conclusions reached at the youth assembly will also be conveyed to UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, underscoring the intention to align leadership decisions with the mood and expectations of party members at the ground level. Akmal further extended an invitation to senior party leaders to attend the meeting so they can hear directly from grassroots representatives.
The decision to call the special meeting follows growing dissatisfaction among UMNO members over recent political developments involving coalition partners. Akmal pointed to the refusal by a DAP lawmaker to retract and apologise for remarks linked to the rejection of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. That refusal, he said, had intensified frustration within UMNO ranks and raised broader questions about the party’s position and dignity within the unity government.
He also acknowledged the actions taken by Selangor UMNO Youth, who staged a protest over what they viewed as celebratory reactions to the court decision involving Najib. In addition, Akmal noted the Puchong UMNO division’s move to sever political cooperation with its Pakatan Harapan counterpart in the constituency, describing it as a reflection of escalating grassroots anger.
The January 3 meeting is therefore expected to go beyond a symbolic gathering, potentially shaping UMNO Youth’s formal stance on remaining in government. Political observers view the assembly as a barometer of internal party dynamics and a test of whether unity government cooperation can be sustained amid rising pressure from within UMNO’s own ranks.
As the youth wing prepares to articulate its position, the broader party leadership faces renewed scrutiny over how it balances coalition stability with internal cohesion and grassroots expectations.
