CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Even as doubts hounded the Alas Pilipinas women’s national volleyball team as it only has a short time to prepare for the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup, the veteran-laden squad delivered a promising performance in their campaign opener.
Alas Pilipinas took down the Uzbekistan side in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon at the Candon City Arena with seasoned players Alyssa Valdez, Jov Gonzaga, and Ces Molina leading the team.
Having only three weeks to work on their chemistry for the international tournament, the 14-woman Alas team showed that they are capable of winning in this tough tournament.
The 32-year-old Valdez led the scoring with 14 points on 11 attacks, two blocks, and an ace. She was backed up by Nina Ytang and Jov Gonzaga, who scored 12 points each.
For interim head coach Shaq Delos Santos, the win was made possible by the leadership of the team’s veterans.
"Of course, we are happy and proud of the team because, as you know, we went through a lot. But knowing them—especially our veteran players—their leadership has had such a huge impact,” he said.
“However, we still need to improve beyond just being happy and having a fighting spirit. Adjusting to the game every day isn't easy, but I think if we really put our minds to it, our performance will get even better. But to be honest, we still have a lot to work on."
The 31-year-old Ces Molina added 11 points for the Philippines.
Against Australia on Sunday, Delos Santos hopes that the team can sustain its momentum.
"For now, we will appreciate our win; it will serve as our inspiration for tomorrow's game. Looking ahead, plus tomorrow's training, we need to prepare even more. That will be another adjustment for the team against Australia," he said.
