Alexander Zverev edged past Joao Fonseca in a hard-fought Monte Carlo Masters quarter-final, which was also the first meeting between the two on the ATP Tour.
The German prevailed 2-1, with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 scoreline. The match tested both players before Zverev’s experience ultimately made the difference.
The world number three now moves on to face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. It marks another high-profile clash between the two, following their recent semi-final meeting at the Miami Open.
Alexander Zverev praises Joao Fonseca but disputes ‘complete player’ label

After the match, Zverev shared his thoughts on Fonseca in an interview with ESPN Brazil. His comments followed Matteo Berrettini describing the Brazilian as a ‘complete player’.
The 28-year-old did not fully agree with that assessment. However, he made it clear he holds Fonseca in high regard.
“I think he’s a tremendous talent. I think all of us, top players, know that he’s coming, and he’s coming very, very fast, and he’s going to be among us soon,” he said.
“Complete player? I think he still needs to improve, for sure, but he’s a very, very good player, and he’s a very good talent.”
“I’m sure that with time he will improve even more, and he will be among the top players.”
His response seemed completely honest, as Zverev opted for a measured approach by acknowledging Fonseca’s potential, while also pointing out areas for development.
Alexander Zverev’s earlier Joao Fonseca doubts add context to latest praise
Zverev’s words carry added weight given his previous stance. Earlier this season, he appeared to question whether Fonseca was living up to the growing hype.
Those remarks resurfaced ahead of their Monte Carlo meeting. They suggested the German was not fully convinced by the early narrative around the teenager, as he suggested Learner Tien was overshadowed by teenagers who did not perform at a good level.
That context makes his latest comments notable. While still urging caution, Zverev has now clearly recognised Fonseca’s rapid progression and emerging status on the tour.
