Ali Khamenei's coffin carried through the streets of Tehran

Iran began the funeral procession for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Monday, with large crowds lining the streets as his flag-draped coffin was carried through the capital.

The video shows mourners weeping, reaching towards the truck carrying the coffins and throwing scarves and pieces of fabric to be touched against them, a gesture widely seen as a blessing. The procession marks the start of a journey that will take the remains through several cities in Iran and neighbouring Iraq.

The funeral followed a two-day farewell ceremony at Tehran's Grand Mosalla, where hundreds of thousands gathered to pay their respects. Many chanted anti-Israel and anti-US slogans, while banners called for revenge over the airstrike that killed Khamenei and members of his family.

The ceremonies also serve as an early test of public support for Iran's leadership following the appointment of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new supreme leader.
