I always remember my school football coach, Dato' M. Karathu, who is a former Malaysian football manager and his legacy remaining as an iconic and impressive national player as ever, said “Training is a constant reminder of our differences. I liked to nail down every scenario, to plan for the worst and to role play ‘what-if’ and ‘work-ons’ scenarios, with and without the ball to be world class team.” (www.dagangnews.com>sukan-terkini>; www.hotfm.audio>tag
Evidently, throughout my experience writing and reviewing of the book “The Malaysia Airlines We Built”, while speaking to senior managers and top performers in business and sport, one idea revealed itself to me again and again. It came to sit above all the others, and it runs deep through this book like words through a stick of rock. It's the idea that if we celebrate difference & forge togetherness, we will surely accelerate growth. (Malaysian Airlines System Retirees Association (MASRA) Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak)
So, I felt good to be going at it again, revisiting my 8 years old grandson, Izz Fayyadh Haji Mohd Faiz's football training at Ortan FC Academy Cyberjaya. It has always been buzzing with energy for the young footballers, boys and girls aged 4-16 come together from all backgrounds, united by their passion for training. Rain and shine, they show up, to learn & practise new skills from a team of coach. (www.threads.net>ortanfc<; www.istagram.com>ortanfc<)
I had an opportunity to engage in a conversation with Coach Afiz who said, “It's a challenge to ensure that Ortan FC training is always up to date and furure-focused. Too often, it is ‘off-the-sheft’ & geared towards legacy behaviours that are based on outdated thinking.”
As a corporate trainer, I agree with Afiz that there is always a balance to be stuck between preparing what we are going to do and in preparing for what our opponents might do, and this raises the question of how much energy a coach should give to opposition tactics.
