That was what Dr Mahathir said.
He said this in response to a question from Khairy Jamaluddin in his program Keluar Sekejap on why he did not take any action to stop the corrupt practice.
He responded by saying it was not his duty.
That was the job of the Anti Corruption Agency.
When they saw irregularities, they didn’t have to wait for the prime minister to tell them what to do.
Indirectly he is saying he did nothing about corruption other than watch during his time as the Prime Minister.
He further added that he should not be blamed for the culture of bribery and corruption in Umno, which some argue stemmed during his term as the party president.
He claimed it was PM10 who was the then Umno deputy president, who introduced the concept within the party before he was sacked in 1998.
Unfortunately, the last Director General of the Anti Corruption Agency (ACA) and the first Chief Commissioner of its successor agency, MACC, Datuk Ahmad Said Hamdan has passed on.
Otherwise, it is proper for him to confirm what Dr Mahathir said about the dereliction of duties by ACA and MACC in curbing corruption within the country.
The 2nd Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed who helmed MACC from 1 January 2010 to 31 July 2016 might be gracious enough to come out and confirm the representation by Dr Mahathir.
Similarly, previous Chief Commissioners, Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad and Datuk Mohamad Shukri Abdull should also respond to Dr Mahathir’s representation.
For years, the ordinary rakyat has always blamed Dr Mahathir for the corruption happening in this country.
Now that he revealed it was not his duty and it was and always has been the responsibility of ACA and its successor, MACC, all the former Chief Commissioners of MACC has a responsibility to confirm the representation made by Dr Mahathir.
They also have a moral responsibility to clear and absolve Dr Mahathir of all the allegations and aspersion casts for so long about his role in the state of corruption in this country.
The former Chief Commissioners owed it that much to clear and absolve Dr Mahathir for his role when it was they themselves should shoulder the blame and take the responsibilities for the widespread corruption culture that has been permeating the political scene and the government machinery at every level.
Dr Mahathir was not just babbling his usual shit during the interview.
It was clear to all who watched and listen to the podcast that he is still very lucid and clear minded in his response.
It was obvious that he was shouldering this blame for a long time, not being able or given the opportunity to reveal it publicly.
Now that he has revealed it publicly, all the former Chief Commissioners of MACC should respond and clear the air.
