All we need is the Tartan Army for soft power, says Flynn

Scotland does not need politicians to exercise soft power, the country’s Economy Secretary said – just the Tartan Army.

Scottish football fans have drawn praise from around the world for their light-hearted, alcohol-heavy antics in Boston before, during and after their side’s first World Cup match in 28 years, including a thousands-strong takeover of a baseball game.

But Stephen Flynn – himself a member of the Tartan Army who is due to cross the Atlantic this week – said the level of support could draw positives for the country.

“We talk about soft power, we talk about building relationships,” he told the Press Association on Wednesday.

“It’s not for politicians to do that – all we need to do is get a bunch of Scottish folk to go to a tournament with some kilts and get a few beers, speak to the locals, enjoy themselves, sing, dance and just live life the way it should be lived – with a smile on your face.

“I think for all the Americans right now, and people right across the world who are watching the World Cup, all they’re talking about is Scotland.

“That can only be a good thing for us here at home and it’s only a good thing for the team as well, because they know they’ve got the best backing anywhere on the planet.”

Speaking ahead of joining the Tartan Army in the US, Mr Flynn said he had “Fomo (the fear of missing out” after watching the rafts of videos of fans on social media.

“The Tartan Army are just a brilliant bunch of folk to spend your time with, I’ve been fortunate enough to do that over many years and I can’t wait to join them,” he said.
