Allow concert if security concerns manageable: Ex-Chief Minister

Kota Kinabalu: Security concerns should be properly managed and not become a barrier for gospel singer Israel Houghton’s proposed concert here, says Sabah Umno Treasurer Datuk Salleh Said Keruak.

“If these concerns can be reasonably managed, the emphasis should be on ensuring that the concert is conducted responsibly and peacefully, rather than preventing it from taking place altogether,” he said on Facebook.

The former Chief Minister said security concerns should not automatically mean that the proposed concert cannot proceed.

“The key question is whether those concerns can be properly managed through appropriate security arrangements,” he said.

Salleh said the concerns raised by Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun must be taken seriously as the police are in the best position to assess potential risks to public order and recommend precautions.

“But all factors should be considered before a final decision is made. Israel Houghton is a gospel singer with followers among the Christian community, including in Sabah.

“Sabah has always been known for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities. This is a tradition worth preserving,” he said.

Houghton is a Grammy Award-winning American gospel singer, songwriter and worship leader who fronts the Christian music group Israel & New Breed.

He is scheduled to perform at several venues in the city from Oct 22 to 25 as part of an ongoing international tour.

On Monday, Jauteh said authorities received two police reports about the concert following online promotions for the event, with concerns raised centred on sensitivities regarding the artist’s name and claims concerning his stance on Israel.

Jauteh noted that despite the concerts being widely advertised with specific dates, venues and ticket prices, the organisers have yet to submit a formal application to the State Government.

Jauteh said final approval authority rests with the State Government, but if advice is requested, the police would recommend postponing the event under current conditions.

“Our priority is to ensure that issues involving public sensitivities do not affect public order. We will do our best to ensure that any issue that could potentially disrupt public harmony is addressed with appropriate action,” he said.
