Argentina forward Julián Alvarez no longer sees his future at Atlético Madrid and says the best solution for everyone would be a transfer, he told broadcaster ESPN after the 2-0 win over Austria on Monday.
Reports have said city rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona were vying for the 26-year-old. Alvarez's contract at Atlético runs until 2030 and media reports have speculated his release clause is €500 million ($571 million).
"There is no amount for which Barcelona could buy Julián - he will not move to Barcelona," Madrid sports newspaper AS quoted an unnamed Atlético representative as saying. "Either the release clause is paid or nothing."
The club is also said to have already rejected a Real offer of €150 million.
Álvarez has been playing for the Rojiblancos since 2024 and especially impressed in last season's Champions League with 10 goals and four assists.
"I don't think it's the right moment to talk, but I also don't want to hide," the former Manchester City striker told ESPN.
"I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people (at Atlético) who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream."
Shortly after Alvarez spoke about the issue, images appeared on social media showing some Atlético fans burning the player's shirt.
