I am indeed encouraged to read the feedback from CPA Suppiah Subramaniam, former adviser to Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad and for aviation related projects in India, Cambodia & Myanmar, to my story published by newswav.com entitled “The power of Teacher-Student Bonding: Creating a Foundation for Belonging, High Sense of Purpose and Emotional Wellbeing” published by newswav.com on Friday, 11 September 2026. I quote “I recall that during our school days, the teachers apart from the work at the class, played an active role in all extra curricular activities, sports in particular. This brought the teachers closer to the students and thus bond was strong. The teachers had the opportunity to know the students better and were able to guide them accordingly. In fact the trust and mutual understanding were also better. The students perform well in sports, co-curricular activities and in their studies.”
I recall during my tenure as corporate trainer with MAS Academy and currently as management educator with graduate business schools, I learned most from teaching others. I know what I know but, through questions posed by my students, I find out there is more to learn. So, I'm a teacher and a student. I have often found as a teacher that the topics I am most adept at sharing with my students are often the ones that I am actively engaged in as a student. I am more present to that material and what my students' needs and struggles may be, because their needs & struggles that I have been actively working within myself. Sometimes a student reveals some new approach through their own exploration that I hadn't thought of it which leads to new realizations.
I remember in the presentation by Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai, Executive Chairman of Top Glove, that “It is important to be humbled enough to be a lifelong student to gain knowledge and improve ourselves. We must also be generous to teach & guide the people around us, so that we can improve together.”
