JOHOR BAHRU - Johor Amanah chairman Aminolhuda Hassan has urged voters to remember remarks by Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders about potentially freeing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, warning that such a move would raise questions over fairness and justice.
Aminolhuda said voters should consider what he described as a double standard in the treatment of ordinary Malaysians convicted for minor offences compared with those involved in major corruption cases.
He pointed to cases involving poor individuals who were jailed for stealing basic necessities such as bread, milk or coffee, arguing that they faced harsh consequences despite their circumstances.
“People who steal bread, people who steal milk or coffee from shops because they want to feed their children who are hungry are charged and sent to prison.
“But someone who is accused of taking RM4 billion of the people’s money can suddenly be considered for release. Can that be accepted?," he said during a campaign event.
Aminolhuda was referring to ongoing political debate surrounding Najib, who is serving a prison sentence after being convicted in the SRC International case.
The former prime minister was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million, though the Federal Court later reduced his sentence following a decision by the Pardons Board.
He said Johor voters should take note of statements made by BN and Umno leaders regarding Najib’s future, particularly ahead of the state election.
“If Umno wins big, if Barisan Nasional wins big, they have said they will free someone who has been imprisoned. Can that be allowed?.
Aminolhuda’s remarks come as political parties make their final push for support before polling day, with parties competing to convince Johor voters on issues including governance, accountability and public welfare.
The Election Commission has set July 11 as polling day for the Johor state election, with voting scheduled to begin at 8 am.
