KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill will continue to lead the Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) after retaining the presidency unopposed for the 2026–2030 term, reinforcing stability at the top of the sport’s governing body.
Nominations for Sunday’s annual general meeting (AGM) in Kuala Lumpur closed last week with no challengers for the post, effectively confirming Amarjit’s position.
This will be his first full term as president. He initially assumed the role in an acting capacity following the death of Datuk Abu Samah Wahab in November 2023, before securing the presidency in 2024 after defeating Yunus Ibrahim and Mazlan Md Jail at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM).
Amarjit’s uncontested return comes amid growing confidence in his leadership, particularly following Malaysia’s successful hosting of the UCI Track World Cup leg at the National Velodrome in Nilai — the country’s first time staging the event since 2001.
Calling his reappointment an honour, Amarjit said the focus now shifts to raising standards.
“This is a huge honour for me. It also means there is more hard work to be done,” he said in a statement.
“My goal is to elevate Malaysian cycling to world-class standards.”
He added that Malaysia’s ability to host a major international event reflects its readiness to take on bigger challenges.
“Hosting the World Cup here shows we have the capacity to stage world-class events. I am confident we can bring the Track World Championships to Malaysia. This will be a key performance indicator for the new leadership elected on Sunday,” he said.
Amarjit has already indicated his intention to bid for the 2029 or 2030 UCI Track World Championships.
He also holds several key positions in international and regional cycling, serving as a vice president of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), president of the Asian Cycling Confederation, and president of the Perak Cycling Association.
He follows in the footsteps of his father, Tan Sri Darshan Singh Gill, who led MNCF from 1988 to 1990, before Abu Samah’s tenure from 1990 to 2023.
Attention at Sunday’s AGM will now turn to other key contests, including the deputy president’s race between Norazman Abu Samah (Melaka) and Saiful Abdul Jalil (Putrajaya).
Eight candidates are contesting five vice-president posts: Firdaus Arshad (Kuala Lumpur), Norhazlee Md Zaki (Kelantan), Irawan Datu’ Sudarsono (Sarawak), Muhammad Firdaus Dawod (Johor), M.
