KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian cycling has entered the world stage in unprecedented fashion after Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill was elected vice-president of the International Cycling Union (UCI) at its 194th Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, yesterday.

The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) confirmed that Amarjit, who also heads the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC), is the first Malaysian to secure such a high-ranking position in the sport’s global governing body.

Amarjit said his election was both a personal milestone and a sign of Asia’s growing importance in shaping the sport’s future.

“This is proof of the trust placed in me by my peers in the global cycling community, and I dedicate this success to serving the global cycling family with integrity, inclusivity and vision,” he said in a statement.

He pledged close cooperation with UCI president David Lappartient and fellow vice-presidents, adding that he is committed to ensuring cycling “continues to inspire, unite and expand on every continent.”

Lappartient, who was returned unopposed for a third term, welcomed Amarjit’s election, citing his experience as ACC president and his “progressive vision” for world cycling.

“His presence in the UCI’s highest leadership reflects Asia’s increasingly influential voice in the global arena,” Lappartient said.

Alongside Amarjit, Italy’s Enrico Della Casa, the Czech Republic’s Katerina Nash, and Cuba’s José Manuel Pelaez were also elected as vice-presidents for the 2025-2029 term. — September 26, 2025
