Tourism Malaysia's former director-general, Ammar Abd Ghapar, found himself demoted to the role of deputy director-general following a string of underwhelming performances, as revealed by the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Tiong King Sing.

Despite the demotion, Tiong made clear that Ammar was not terminated from his position but rather reassigned due to his inability to meet the expected standards of the tourism industry. Tiong emphasized that efforts were made to support and guide Ammar in improving his performance, with both himself and his deputy offering advice and seeking Ammar's input on enhancing the nation's tourism sector.

Expressing disappointment in Ammar's execution of his duties, Tiong explained that despite holding a Ph.D. in tourism specializing in hotel and tourism management, Ammar's qualifications did not translate into effective performance. Ammar's removal from the director-general post stemmed from concerns raised by various state governments regarding his lack of involvement and effectiveness in the role. Tiong clarified that the decision to demote Ammar was based solely on performance considerations and not influenced by any racial factors.

Highlighting the importance of competence in fulfilling responsibilities, Tiong stated that Ammar's demotion aimed to provide others with the opportunity to contribute effectively to the tourism industry. In response to the demotion, Ammar acknowledged receiving a letter from Tiong confirming his removal from the position, effective from February 26. While the letter did not specify Ammar's next role within the organization, he expressed feelings of frustration and sadness at the decision.

With 36 years of service to the ministry, Ammar expressed disappointment in the treatment received, particularly considering his impending retirement in March 2025. Having assumed the director-general role in April the previous year, Ammar's tenure faced scrutiny due to perceived performance gaps, leading to his demotion rather than termination.

The demotion serves as a reminder of the importance of competence and effectiveness in fulfilling leadership roles, particularly in the dynamic and competitive landscape of the tourism industry. As Ammar navigates this change in position, the episode underscores the significance of consistent performance and accountability in driving the growth and success of the tourism sector.
