The Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC) has reported significant progress in scientific municipal solid waste management, with cumulative waste handling crossing nearly 6.73 lakh MT till May 24.
According to the civic body, the waste management operations are being carried out with emphasis on scientific segregation, resource recovery, landfill load reduction, and sustainable disposal practices.
Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill said, till April 30, the MC had already handled around 5,72,945 MT waste, of which nearly 4,47,839.60 MT was scientifically processed into bio-soil and other recoverable resources.
Substantial quantities of waste were also diverted towards construction and demolition waste processing, refuse-derived fuel (RDF) generation, and other scientific disposal mechanisms.
Shergill said sanitation and waste processing activities remained consistent during May 2026, reflecting the operational efficiency of the city’s sanitation network and workforce. On several occasions during the month, daily waste collection and processing crossed the 4,000 MT mark.
The highest daily waste handling was recorded on May 6, when nearly 4,460 MT municipal waste was processed through various treatment streams. As per cumulative figures available till May 24, the MC has processed approximately 6,73,270 MT waste overall.
Out of this, nearly 5,23,083.30 MT has been converted into bio-soil and recyclable output.
Around 30,861 MT waste has been processed under the C&D waste category, while approximately 36,514.62 MT has been converted into RDF for alternative fuel use.
