The NRI police station here has booked an NRI and his parents of Pathankot on charges of allegedly demanding dowry. The accused is stated to be a close relative of a prominent politician of Pathankot.

Those booked have been identified as Akash Bhatia, residing in Australia, his father Ashwani Bhatia and mother Anu Bhatia. The case was registered on the complaint of Palak, a resident of Australia who originally hailed from Green Avenue locality here.

The complainant in her complaint to the NRI police station said that she was married to Akash Bhatia on November 14, 2022. After the marriage, the couple moved to Australia with the support of Akash’s parents. However, Palak alleged that soon after reaching Australia, the attitude of her husband and in-laws changed drastically.

She alleged that the family began pressuring her to provide substantial dowry. When her family objected to the demands, she allegedly faced continuous mental and physical harassment at the hands of her husband.

Palak further alleged that her family in an effort to resolve the dispute sent 40,000 Australian dollars along with other valuable items to the accused. Despite this, the harassment allegedly continued.
