The Amritsar police have busted a cross-border illegal arms smuggling module and arrested eight accused, officials said on Thursday. The police have recovered 11 sophisticated pistols and eight live cartridges from their possession.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations had revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based operatives involved in the supply of illegal weapons. According to the DGP, the recovered weapons were intended to be distributed among criminals and were likely to be used for extortion, violent crimes and other unlawful activities.

The police have registered separate FIRs at the airport, Sadar and Chheharta police stations in Amritsar in connection with the case. Officials said further investigation was underway to establish other links of the network, identify associates connected with the smuggling module and ascertain whether more recoveries and arrests could be made.
