Over the past 50 years, Malaysia's fertility rate has decreased tremendously, from 6.7 children per woman in 1957 to 4 in 1980, then 3 in 2000 and 2.1 in 2010. Last year, the rate dropped yet again to 1.6 children per woman aged 15-49 years old, which has became the lowest rate recorded in the country. This emerging issue has been quite a concern worldwide, especially to the traditional older generations who had been anticipating grandchildren.

To incentivize birth-giving, a Taiwanese couple was “paid” to give birth! According to this Taiwanese woman (nicknamed Alice) who posted her experience on Dcard, her father in-law once told her before her marriage that if she were to give birth in future, he will provide an angpao as a token of appreciation. She stated that she didn't take it seriously at first, but after giving birth to her elder daughter and ended her confinement, her father-in-law indeed gave her a BIG angpao, which consists of a 500K Taiwan Dollar Cheque (Roughly RM74K).

She was extremely astonished by the big amount of money given by her father-in-law and decided to return, yet both her in-laws as well as her husband insisted her to keep it. Surprisingly, later on, when she gave birth to her younger son, the same thing happened again, and this time, it's 800K Taiwan Dollar (Roughly RM118K)! Hence, she decided to post this on social media, asking netizens if they faced the same thing.

Though some netizens mentioned that they've not met such in-laws and even wanted in-laws like the ones Alice had, most of them also shared their own individual experiences! Some claimed that their in-laws provided quite a similar amount of angpao and even paid for the child's child care expenses, while another netizen stated that her in-law gifted her an entire house which generates a 40K Taiwan Dollar (around RM5.9K) rental monthly!

Not sure if Malaysia has the same kind of in-laws, but if you're given such an in-law, are you willing to give birth more?
