Real people paying off debt: budgeting, side hustles and the debt snowball.

I spent the last two days of our trip to Georgia with my daughter, Princess, while my dad visited with his sister and brother in law. She and I always have a good time together. Talk about life, she cooks for me. I get a glimpse into her life that I wouldn’t otherwise have. We watch old corny movies. And we play mancala (I bought each of my kids the game last Christmas.)

This trip, we did a rate your life in these categories kind of discussion:

  • Financial
  • Social
  • Physical
  • Health
  • Mental
  • Spiritual

Because of her job in finance, her ability to invest is limited. Don’t ask to me explain it because I can’t. But I do understand it. Or rather the reasoning behind it. And she takes it very seriously.

But on the flip side, she has so much more knowledge them me about money, how it works, the power of it, and the risks. At a much larger level than just personal household finance.

Listening to speak about her goals, her challenges, and her insights about her own personal finances, just blew me away.

She is making the decisions now to prepare for a future that she dreams of. She is being selfish with intent. And I am just dumbstruck with pride.

I guess I wanted to share this because it can give other people like me, who really screwed up financially while raising kids…that it’s not genetic and there is true hope that they will do so much better then we did. Be wiser. Be more determined.

There are so many times now that I look at each of my kids and am just in awe. I’ve got a college professor son, a son who’s working in the industry he planned for in high school and is now talking about going back to school, a daughter who is loving married life, working part time and embracing her God given ability at homemaking and creativeness, a daughter who just blows my mind with her intentionality as she grows in her career path as she plans her future, and a son who took a break but is now in his second semester of college, chasing a career he wants (and getting straight A’s)!

And they are all coming to Texas for Thanksgiving. I am so grateful!
