Following up on our story of Kamaruddin, an OKU in Alor Setar who was inadvertently charged RM100 for a doctor to verify his status as a handicap, we are happy to report that the Deputy Director of the hospital has since called him to apologise for the unfortunate error. But no refund was mentioned.

However, he is now scheduled to have one of his kidneys removed and his reluctant to undergo the operation. He feels that there was no reason to remove it now that he health is improving and second he might not be able to pay the hospital for operation and after care.

Anyway, he now worries about having to pay for his medical bills as well as for his daily needs.

If he went ahead with this planned kidney removal it would be his fourth major operation at the same hospital.

Earlier he had gallstones removed and urethra operated on for blockage then he went through a coronary angioplasty where he had a stent inserted in his artery. He also had a minor cataract surgery to correct his eyesight. All were successfully completed and he appreciates those who had assisted him.

But he is now like a vegetable. He cannot walk or easily move his arms and legs. He has to be cared for by his wife from the time he wakes up in the morning until he goes to bed at night.

She bathes him, dresses him up, feeds him all day long. She is his full time care giver, he said.

"I have an incredible wife", Kamaruddin admitted. Without her he would be helpless, he told us.

He confessed, besides the pain he had to endure daily he now worries endlessly about how to pay for his forthcoming surgery, hospitalisation that follows and making ends meet on a daily basis.

He has exhausted his entire savings for his medical expenses in the last four years. He has no pension because he is a self employed entrepreneur in the advertising industry making his money mostly by building billboards. But what little savings he has is now gone.

So, he and his family has now embarked upon baking bread to supplement income.

The bread that they prepare is popularly known as Roti Palembang which is rare in the market because not many know how to bake it the way it was originally prepared for a Sultan at an istana.

If you would like to help Kamaruddin an OKU who deserves your support go order his bread. He'll courier them to you via overnight express. You'll love this exquisite bread. No bread tastes as good as Roti Palembang.

Taste a bit of history when you bite into the bread while helping an OKU make ends meet.

May be #KeluargaMalaysia with a bigger budget ought to look into the plight of this poor guy.
