'An Umno secret' - Party keeps Melaka election strategy under wraps

UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has declined to reveal whether the party will contest the upcoming Melaka state election independently or in partnership with its unity government allies, describing the matter as confidential within party ranks.

His remarks come amid growing speculation over electoral arrangements as political realignments continue within Malaysia’s governing coalition framework.

“That is a party secret,” he said when asked by reporters after officiating the inaugural supreme council convention of the Coalition of Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Associations.

On internal party reform and membership renewal efforts, Khaled said the Rumah Bangsa initiative was designed not only to facilitate the return of former members but also to simplify entry for younger generations and new supporters.

“We will also expand it as a platform for anyone who has views or suggestions, and who wants to advance the country and the nation,” he said.

He added that any announcements involving returning or new figures would be made at the appropriate time.

“When the time comes, we will announce,” he said.

The initiative has been positioned by Umno as part of a broader effort to rebuild and expand its support base.

Party president and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on April 19 that more political figures, including former opposition leaders, were expected to rejoin Umno through Rumah Bangsa.

Zahid said several of these individuals had already met him, and that the party would streamline the process for those seeking re-entry.

He previously cited Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin, and Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar as examples of individuals whose return had been facilitated without requiring lengthy committee procedures.

Earlier, on April 17, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said a total of 6,252 former leaders and members at various levels had been readmitted into the party under the Rumah Bangsa initiative. - April 27, 2026
