Andy Murray started his Qatar Open campaign in superb fashion with a straight sets victory over Alexandre Muller to end a losing streak of six consecutive matches.
The former world No. 1 who has slipped to 50th in the ATP rankings, started in lightning quick fashion, dominating his own serve in the opening set before clinically picking Muller’s apart.
A nervous moment occured with Murray 3-0 up in the first as he called for the trainer to look at his knee but following a medical time out, the 36-year-old shook off the knock and managed to get through the rest of the set taking it 6-1.
The second set was a much closer affair. Both players held serve well but Murray got the first break to move 4-3 ahead only to give the next game back to Muller with some poor unforced errors.
It had to be decided by a tiebreak and Murray dug into his well known reserves of mental fortitude to fight from 5-3 down and clinch the tiebreak 7-5 after winning four points in a row.
The victory is his first of 2024 and the Scot will face 18-year-old Jakub Mensik in the next round.
