Another record temperature has been recorded in Germany, this time for the south-east state of Saxony, where a provisional temperature of 41.5 degrees Celsius was measured on Sunday, the German weather service (DWD) said.

It came a day after the last heat record in the state was recorded. Overall the country's record high temperature reached 41.7 degrees on Sunday in the state of Brandenburg near Berlin.

The Saxony record holder is Bad Muskau in the Upper Lusatia region, the DWD said in response to an enquiry. Only on Saturday a new record for the state was measured in Klitzschen near Torgau at 40.3 degrees.

Forecasts had been for record temperatures this weekend - not only for Saxony but for the country as residents and tourists bake in the unprecedented heat. Nights refused to cool off, as temperatures did not drop below 20 degrees. The DWD calls nights above this threshold "tropical nights."

Intense heatwaves like the one now gripping much of Europe over the last days have become more common and are expected to intensify due to climate change.

Figures from DWD show that the average number of days with temperatures above 30 degrees has increased in Germany.

Although there are significant fluctuations from year to year, the German Environment Agency has said that the overall trend is on a clear upward trajectory.

There is no respite in sight before the start of next week, when partially severe thunderstorms could potentially hit the country on Monday.
