Almost one week after the tragic aircraft crash at Elmina, Shah Alam, Malaysians are still reeling from the aftermath of the incident and mourning the loss of 10 innocent lives in the tragedy.
Investigations on the crash are also ongoing, with one key figure that is always in the public eyes sharing updates on the matter being Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
However, it seems that Loke’s participation in the investigation was being questioned by certain quarters, with some even calling him a ‘busybody’ and that he should leave it to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Home Ministry to handle.
The Transport Minister has since responded himself regarding these allegations, clarifying that he is not being a busybody on the matter and that the investigation of the incident is actually under his ministry’s jurisdiction.
In a video posted on his official Facebook page summarising one of his press conferences, Loke asserted that the question of being a busybody shouldn’t arise as this is a matter of responsibility, human lives and safety.
He further elaborated that when an aircraft crash incident happens, the responsibility to investigate lies with the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
Loke added that within our country’s aviation matters, AAIB reports directly to the Transport Minister. Furthermore, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), which is mostly in charge of aviation safety standards and protocols, is not part of the investigation regarding aircraft crashes.
Hence, the Transport Minister hope that the public can understand the difference between the two aviation authority units. Moreover, given that AAIB reports directly to Loke, that is why MOT is an important part of the investigation.
