Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated national track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang on his historic victory in the men's keirin at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
In a post on X today, Anwar said the achievement ended a 16-year wait for Mohd Azizulhasni, popularly known as "The Pocket Rocketman", to be crowned Commonwealth Games men's keirin champion.
"This success is the result of unwavering determination, perseverance and fighting spirit. It has brought honour to Malaysia on the international stage and serves as an inspiration to all Malaysians," he said, while also reposting a Glasgow 2026 post.
Earlier, Mohd Azizulhasni won the men's keirin gold medal at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow early today (Friday night, Scotland time).
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist finished ahead of Australia's Leigh Hoffman and England's Harry Ledingham-Horn, who claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Meanwhile, another Malaysian rider, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, finished seventh.
For the record, Azizulhasni, who was making his fourth Commonwealth Games appearance, previously won bronze medals in the team sprint at the 2010 New Delhi Games and the keirin at the 2014 Glasgow Games.
The victory also delivered Malaysia's seventh gold medal at Glasgow 2026 and the national track cycling team's first gold medal of this edition of the Games.
