Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Tambun-PH has reminded the opposition that the attorney-general (AG) responsible for proposing the conditional discharge for Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of Bagan Datuk-BN was appointed during the previous Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Anwar emphasized his commitment to not tolerating the corrupt practices of the past that allowed politicians to escape justice. Anwar clarified that he had no involvement in the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to his deputy prime minister.

He pointed out that there were past cases where the court issued DNAA verdicts after establishing prima facie evidence. However, he refrained from naming the opposition MP involved in one such case to avoid offense. Anwar explained that the decision regarding DNAA rests with the AG, and the opposition should understand this. He mentioned that the current administration had appointed the same AG, Tan Sri Idrus Harun, as the previous government, which is why the opposition refuses to accept his explanation on Zahid's DNAA.

Anwar reiterated his determination to break away from the previous system and firmly address the issue of Zahid's DNAA. Idrus, who retired as AG the day after Zahid's DNAA was granted, was previously appointed by the administration of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Anwar responded to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's accusation of him yielding to corrupt demands by dismissing it as baseless.

He clarified that the AG has discretion in deciding whether to submit a request for DNAA, and there is no evidence to suggest his interference in the matter. Anwar stated that ordering the AG to press charges to appear heroic would go against Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution, which grants the AG the power to conduct or discontinue proceedings at his discretion.

He emphasized that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will continue its investigations into Zahid's corruption case and present any evidence to the courts. Anwar reiterated that he had no influence over Idrus's decision to submit a DNAA. Anwar sympathized with those who were unhappy about Zahid's DNAA but emphasized that it was the AG appointed by the previous administration who made the decision.

He previously stated that Idrus reviewed the facts and the representation letter submitted by Zahid's lawyers, which led to the request for his conditional release. Anwar acknowledged people's displeasure but highlighted that the current AG, Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, now has to address the matter despite it being decided by an AG appointed by the previous government.
