Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Malaysia should be infused with the principles of 'turath Islam' (Islamic scholarly tradition), rather than being entirely shaped by Western paradigms. Anwar underscored the importance of integrating the rich heritage of Islamic knowledge and ethical values into AI advancements to ensure that technological progress aligns with 'adab' (manners) and 'akhlak' (morality).
In his remarks, Anwar highlighted that the current foundation of AI technology is predominantly influenced by Western sources, as these nations have been at the forefront of AI development. He expressed concern that the values inherent in AI systems developed in Malaysia are predominantly Western, which might not always resonate with the cultural and moral fabric of Islamic countries.
"My apprehension is that as we advance AI in Malaysia, the embedded values and thought processes are heavily Western. Although AI is viewed as a neutral tool, capable of incorporating a comprehensive corpus of knowledge, the responses generated by these systems reflect the underlying values of the input data, which are often Western," Anwar stated.
To address this, Anwar proposed that the integration of Islamic intellectual traditions into AI is essential. By embedding Islamic moral systems and values, AI technology can better serve the needs and uphold the ethical standards of Islamic communities. This approach ensures that AI applications in Islamic countries do not diverge from the foundational moral and ethical principles of Islam.
Anwar's call for a balanced development of AI, incorporating both advanced technological knowledge and Islamic ethical values, represents a vision where progress and tradition coexist. This integration is aimed at creating AI systems that are not only technologically advanced but also morally grounded, reflecting the cultural and ethical diversity of Malaysia and other Islamic nations.
