Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to uphold transparency and accountability in his official statements, particularly those made in Parliament. During a press conference held at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, Hamzah cautioned that any misleading remarks made in the House should be addressed through an apology, especially if found to be false.

Hamzah referenced a number of ongoing issues, including the investigation into the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) concerning Pulau Batu Puteh. He pointed out that a formal motion had been tabled by Perikatan Nasional’s Chief Whip, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, on July 24 to refer the Member of Parliament for Tambun to the Rights and Freedoms Committee for allegedly misleading the House on the RCI matter. Despite the Speaker’s assurance that the matter is under review, Hamzah expressed concern over potential delays, hinting sarcastically that the findings might not surface until the next general election.

In addition to this, Hamzah also echoed concerns raised earlier by Hulu Terengganu MP Datuk Rosol Wahid regarding judicial independence. This followed the Prime Minister’s reasoning that former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not face prosecution due to his age. Hamzah appeared to question the logic behind such justification, implying that innocence should not be linked to age.

The opposition leader also threw his support behind Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who had recently demanded a retraction and apology from Anwar over a controversial statement. The remark in question had accused Muhyiddin of backing the allocation of RON95 fuel subsidies to foreign nationals—an allegation described as baseless.

According to Hamzah, such accusations, if unfounded, not only damage reputations but also mislead the public and undermine the integrity of Parliament. He warned against using official positions to spread misinformation or suppress dissenting voices, particularly when those voices aim to bring public interest issues to light.

Hamzah further emphasized that the powers held by the current government should not be misused to conceal facts or silence opposition figures. He called on the Speaker of the House to remain impartial and not shield any MP facing legitimate allegations of misconduct.
