PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised that a nation cannot achieve progress or stability if there are ongoing conflicts between races and religions.
Speaking at the 18th DAP National Congress held at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Section 15 today, Anwar shared his vision for a unified Malaysia under the leadership of the MADANI Government.
He stated that the key to elevating the nation’s dignity and strengthening its institutions lies in good governance and democratic accountability, a sentiment shared by the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
“The government needs the support and participation of communities from all racial backgrounds. We cannot simply follow the pace set by other nations,” Bernama cited him saying.
He then questioned, “Where in the world is there a country that can progress and remain stable while suffering from constant clashes between races and religions? There is none. But we do have a choice.”
Anwar expressed his gratitude to DAP for aligning with the government’s vision, along with other key political parties such as PKR, Amanah, and UPKO.
He also acknowledged the support of UMNO, GPS, and GRS, who, he said, back the government based on the fundamental principle that Malaysia must stay on the right track.
The Prime Minister, who also serves as the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH), addressed accusations that DAP is a racist party, a claim often made by the opposition.
He pointed out that these critics often forget that they have previously worked alongside DAP without raising such issues.
Anwar explained that the opposition's current narrative revolves around racial fear-mongering, particularly focusing on claims that the Unity Government is weak due to alleged influence from certain parties, especially those from the Chinese community.
"Don’t they know? In the past, under Pakatan Rakyat, for almost 15 years, PAS worked alongside us in PH under Tun Mahathir.
The people who are now joining Bersatu once sat at the table with DAP leadership," Anwar said.
"Are their remarks true? No. They are the words of desperate groups."
Anwar labelled these tactics as "desperado politics," accusing the opposition of trying to manipulate racial issues for their own gain.
He said the opposition had failed to present any new policies or proposals and instead attempted to instill fear among the Malay community regarding the perceived rise of the Chinese community, largely attributed to DAP.
Turning to DAP’s role in the Unity Government, Anwar clarified that the party’s support is based on shared principles and a commitment to reform, rather than individual personalities.
He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to DAP's veteran leadership, including figures such as Lim Kit Siang, Chen Man Hing, Karpal Singh, and P. Patto, who have been instrumental in advocating for the people's voices and struggles.
“Soon after independence, there were voices within the government expressing concerns about issues like corruption, poverty, and inequality. But it was DAP that emerged as a true leader, with prominent and courageous figures who spoke out.
“They endured oppression under draconian laws, all while advocating for democracy, transparency, and exposing corruption among political leaders of the time,” Anwar reflected.
He saluted DAP for its role in shaping a mass education movement that informed Malaysians, particularly the youth, about the importance of good governance.
“I choose not to be apologetic or defensive,” he concluded, reaffirming his commitment to the shared goals of the Unity Government. - March 16, 2025
