KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a thorough, transparent and uncompromising investigation into the death of Noorizwan Zulkefly in police custody.
In a Facebook post today, Anwar said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail to obtain further information on the case and ensure that updates on the investigation were conveyed to the deceased’s family.
He said he understood the family’s grief and anxiety as they awaited answers about Noorizwan’s death.
“I acknowledge the presence of the late Noorizwan’s family to submit an appeal letter to me today. I am deeply saddened by his passing and understand the family’s grief and anxiety as they await answers,” he said.
Anwar, who was scheduled to attend several programmes in Melaka today, said he had delegated his officers to receive the appeal letter and listen to the concerns raised by the family.
Media reports previously said police were awaiting the full report from the Chemistry Department and the pathology findings to determine the actual cause of Noorizwan’s death on Oct 1.
Noorizwan was detained by the Cheras District Police Headquarters to assist in investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Sections 457 and 379 of the Penal Code.
He was subsequently referred to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) for treatment on Sept 30 and was pronounced dead at 1.52 am the following day.
