KUALA LUMPUR: A post-mortem examination on a 42-year-old man who died after being referred to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), while in police custody on Oct 1 found no injuries to his internal organs, although several external injuries were noted.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Aida Abdul Hamid said the cause of death remained undetermined pending laboratory analysis.

“The cause of death has been recorded as pending laboratory analysis,” she said in a statement today.

The man was detained by police from the Cheras district police headquarters on Sept 19 in connection with investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Sections 457 and 379 of the Penal Code.

Aida said the man was referred to HCTM for treatment on Sept 30 and received initial medical attention before being pronounced dead at 1.52 am the following day.

The case has been classified as sudden death, while the Bukit Aman Death in Custody Criminal Investigation Unit (USJKT) continues to investigate the incident from various angles.

Aida said the unit had so far recorded statements from 78 witnesses, including police officers, members of the public, medical officers, forensic medical specialists, representatives of the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) and two of the deceased’s family members.

The case has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) in accordance with Section 26 of the Independent Police Conduct Commission Act 2022 (Act 839).

Aida said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) remained committed to transparency and accountability, urging the public not to speculate while investigations were ongoing.

She added that JIPS would take action against any misconduct in accordance with the law.

On Oct 17, a family member of the deceased, Noorizwan Zulkefly, submitted a memorandum to PDRM seeking an investigation into the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
