The update was confirmed on 6 January 2026 by his press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, who said medical assessments carried out after admission verified the injury. He added that the former premier would require extended hospital care to allow for proper treatment and recovery, given the nature of the fracture and his age.

Dr Mahathir, who turned 100 in July 2025, was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur at about 9.30am on 6 January 2026. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance after reportedly suffering a fall at his residence earlier that morning. According to initial information provided by his aides, he was conscious and responsive when he arrived at the medical facility.

Family members later indicated that while the injury was serious, it was not considered life-threatening. His daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, said her father’s overall condition was stable and satisfactory when assessed in the context of his age. She explained that doctors were taking a cautious approach to ensure that his recovery process was properly managed and free from complications.

Marina also said the family intended to release a more comprehensive statement once further medical details were available, noting the importance of accuracy when describing his condition and treatment plan. She reassured the public that her father remained in good spirits despite the setback.

Dr Mahathir, Malaysia’s fourth and seventh prime minister, has a long medical history that has required periodic monitoring in recent years. On 13 July 2025, he was treated at IJN after experiencing fatigue. At that time, his condition did not require prolonged hospitalisation and he was discharged on the same day.

The latest incident has nevertheless prompted heightened concern due to his age and the nature of hip fractures, which often require careful management and extended rehabilitation. Medical professionals generally regard such injuries among elderly patients as requiring close supervision to prevent secondary complications.

Despite the seriousness of the injury, those close to Dr Mahathir have stressed that his condition remains under control and that he is receiving appropriate medical care. Further updates are expected as treatment progresses and doctors assess his response to care over the coming days.

Meanwhile Anwar posted prayers for Tun M on his Facebook account, “Azizah and I pray for Tun’s health and swift recovery, Insya-Allah,”.

Dr Mahathir remains one of Malaysia’s most prominent political figures, and news of his hospitalisation has drawn widespread attention. For now, his family and aides have asked for space and patience as he focuses on recovery under medical supervision.
