In a recent display of misplaced entitlement, a senior aide to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took to social media to express outrage after missing his flight due to his own tardiness.

Shamsul Iskandar Akin, Anwar's senior political secretary, vented his frustration at a local airline for not allowing him to board the flight just 10 minutes before takeoff.

Shamsul's flight, originally scheduled for 6.50pm, was delayed to 8pm. Despite being called to board at 7.45pm, he arrived at the gate at 7.50pm, only to find it closed.

Rather than accepting responsibility for his lateness, Shamsul chose to blame the airline, inciting a backlash from netizens who rightly pointed out that gates close 10 minutes before takeoff to ensure timely departure.

Netizens were quick to remind Shamsul that airline schedules are not like bus timetables, where one can board at the last minute. One in particular was quoted as saying, ‘If you’re late, just accept it. This isn’t a bus where you can still board it at 7.59pm before it leaves at 8pm.’ Another chose to remind the aide: According to SOP, the gate must be closed 10 minutes before takeoff for paperwork to be settled so that the flight isn’t delayed. This is embarrassing.’

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of punctuality and humility, traits evidently lacking in some of Anwar's staff.

Perhaps it's time for Anwar to ensure his team understands that rules apply to everyone, regardless of their position, and that a sense of entitlement has no place in public service.

After all, if his own aides can't manage to catch a flight on time, how can they be trusted to handle more significant matters?
