Anwar Ibrahim's government is no stranger to accusations of crony capitalism, and the recent revelation regarding his former aide, Datuk Farhash Wafa Salvador, only adds fuel to the fire.
Farhash's sudden emergence as a major investor in HeiTech Padu, a company vying for a billion-ringgit government deal, raises serious questions about favouritism and undue influence in the award of contracts.
Farhash's track record speaks for itself. Since Anwar's rise to power, he has been linked to five publicly listed companies, securing chairmanships and significant stakes, all while maintaining close ties to the Prime Minister's Office.
What is worrying is that, “This is the fifth publicly listed company that Mr Farhash, known as Mr Anwar’s “blue-eyed boy” within his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), has been linked to since the Premier was elected to power more than a year ago.” (Straits Times)
This pattern suggests a cosy relationship between certain individuals and the corridors of power, at the expense of fair competition and transparency.
While Farhash defends his actions as part of an investment strategy, claiming to support Bumiputera technology companies, the timing and nature of his investments raise eyebrows.
His involvement in companies seeking government contracts, coupled with his proximity to Anwar, creates a perception of corruption and crony capitalism, undermining public trust in the government's integrity.
These actions have broader implications beyond individual companies. They erode confidence in Malaysia's economic and political stability, casting a shadow over the principles of fair competition and transparency.
Another development that is perceived as possible cronyism is that “Mr Farhash was appointed group chairman of Apex Equity Holdings in December 2022, not long after an investigation was launched into the company by the Securities Commission. The regulator filed a legal suit for breach of capital market rules but withdrew it in December 2023”.
If Anwar's government wants to dispel these perceptions, it must ensure that business dealings are conducted with the utmost transparency and integrity, free from any hint of favouritism or undue influence that PMX has made it his crusade over the years when he was outside the government.
