In a statement issued in Kuala Lumpur on February 2, 2026, Anwar said he only became aware of the matter after the emails resurfaced and attracted renewed public attention. He explained that the correspondence involved third parties who had allegedly mentioned his name while attempting to arrange meetings, without his knowledge or consent.

Anwar stressed that the emails in question dated back more than a decade and had no relevance to his personal or professional activities. He emphasised that he had never been associated with any of the individuals exchanging the messages and categorically rejected any link to Epstein.

He described the situation as surprising but reiterated that there was no substance to the implication, adding that he had never met or dealt with Epstein in any capacity.

Anwar also made it clear that the resurfacing of the emails would not distract him from his responsibilities or planned engagements. He said he intended to proceed with his previously scheduled commitments in Johor Bahru, signalling that he regarded the matter as closed.

The issue emerged amid renewed online scrutiny surrounding documents and communications connected to Epstein, a convicted United States financier who became infamous for running an international sex trafficking operation involving minors. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges, but disclosures linked to his network continue to generate global attention.

Anwar’s office did not indicate that any further action would be taken, maintaining that the clarification was sufficient to address the issue. The prime minister’s stance aligns with his broader emphasis on transparency and accountability, particularly when allegations or insinuations risk undermining public trust.
