Recently released documents from the United States Department of Justice have placed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s name in renewed public focus after it appeared in correspondence linked to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The reference emerged from newly disclosed materials commonly known as the “Epstein Files,” released under a US legal requirement mandating greater transparency.
The latest disclosure, made public in late January 2026, includes millions of pages of records, images, and videos connected to Epstein. Among the documents is an email exchange dated February 22, 2012, between Epstein and an individual whose identity remains redacted by US authorities. The email has drawn attention in Malaysia because it mentions Anwar, although it does not contain allegations of criminal or sexual misconduct.
According to the contents of the email, the discussion centred on political developments in Malaysia and the possibility of arranging a private meeting involving Anwar and another individual identified only as “Jes.” The correspondence suggested that the unnamed sender claimed familiarity with Anwar and expressed confidence in his political comeback at the time.
Within the same exchange, Malaysia was described as a potentially lucrative environment for foreign financial institutions should Anwar rise to the position of prime minister. The email characterised the country as a significant investment opportunity, “a Gold Mine” for a major US bank, citing expectations of reforms and governance changes under Anwar’s leadership.
Another email dated February 21, 2012, indicated that Epstein had sought clarification on Anwar’s travel plans, including whether he might be visiting Europe in March or April of that year. The possibility of a meeting in Malaysia around May 2012 was also mentioned, subject to the timing of Malaysia’s general election at the time.
Local media reports have suggested that the name “Jes” may refer to Jes Staley, a former American banker who later resigned from JP Morgan following revelations about his past association with Epstein. However, the documents do not indicate that any meeting involving Anwar actually took place, nor do they suggest that Anwar had direct contact with Epstein.
The disclosure has nevertheless sparked debate in Malaysia, highlighting how historical correspondence involving prominent international figures continues to attract scrutiny amid the ongoing release of Epstein-related documents by US authorities.
