KLANG, Aug 20 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he will make several important announcements, including one on August 30 and another during the Malaysia Day celebrations on September 16.
However, he did not provide further details.
“I will listen and seek other views and, (by) August 31, I will make one important announcement for the country. Then I will go to Kuching on September 16 for Malaysia Day.
“On the eve of August 31, there will be one announcement, (then) another on September 16 and another in early October (during the tabling of) the Budget,” he said at a meet-and-greet here today.
He said this in response to a student’s question on the government’s efforts to ensure the welfare and financial security of youth involved in the gig economy.
The prime minister said the government is boosting protection for gig workers through the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) and a new bill for small businesses.
He said that while some quarters say existing aid is insufficient, the government is committed to protecting the group’s welfare.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the government would facilitate access to financing for graduates seeking to venture into business, including through the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (TEKUN).
He said the existing requirement for applicants to have a business track record before obtaining financing should be reviewed in light of changing economic conditions and employment trends.
“All I can say here is that I will listen and look into the matter. If we have the capacity, we will do our best for the youth,” Anwar added.
