Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim has dismissed calls for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s resignation over allegations linked to a purported royal addendum order involving Najib Razak. The PKR MP emphasized that the Court of Appeal’s recent decision demonstrates that Malaysia’s separation of powers remains intact and functional.
Hassan, a lawyer by profession, praised Anwar’s commitment to respecting judicial independence in the controversy surrounding the alleged addendum order, which purportedly allows Najib to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest. The Court of Appeal earlier granted Najib leave to initiate judicial review proceedings to compel the government to act on the said order.
According to Hassan, the responsibility for clarifying the addendum’s existence lies with the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC). He pointed out that during the appellate court hearing, Justice Firuz Jaffril raised concerns about the AGC’s silence on the matter, as no affidavits were filed to refute or confirm the addendum’s authenticity.
Hassan stated, “Do we really expect the prime minister to meddle in the professional work of government lawyers and the AGC? Such interference would undermine judicial independence.”
Hassan further argued that demands for Anwar’s resignation are baseless. Instead, the prime minister’s firm stance on non-interference in judicial matters deserves commendation, particularly as it reflects his respect for Malaysia’s legal system.
Meanwhile, opposition figures have accused Anwar of mishandling the situation. PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari described the denial of the addendum order’s existence as a grave injustice and called for Anwar’s resignation. Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin went further, accusing the prime minister of concealing the addendum, which he claimed amounted to treason against the monarchy and the nation.
The Court of Appeal hearing revealed that Najib had obtained a copy of the alleged addendum from the former king, the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, through the Pahang royal household. Najib’s lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, submitted new evidence, including an affidavit from Najib’s son, Nizar, corroborating the addendum’s existence. Justice Firuz noted that this new evidence rendered previous High Court findings of hearsay inadmissible.
