Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong has joined the chorus of voices seeking a straightforward answer from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding the rumored royal addendum on house arrest for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Addressing the matter in a five-minute video shared on his Facebook page, Dr. Wee insisted that the public deserves a simple "yes" or "no" response on whether such an addendum exists.
"The existence of a royal addendum is not a complex issue. It requires a straightforward answer," Dr. Wee said. He highlighted that Malaysians are eager for transparency and clarity, urging Anwar to address the question directly.
He further cited former Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas. According to Dr. Wee, Thomas believed that Malaysian judges are capable of making decisions based solely on the evidence and arguments presented in court, without being swayed by external opinions or information.
The controversy stems from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's earlier response in Parliament, where he referenced the ongoing judicial process to justify his reluctance to address the issue. During Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan had inquired about the addendum's existence. Anwar replied that the Court of Appeal has scheduled a hearing for Najib’s appeal regarding the royal addendum on January 6, 2025. He also emphasized the importance of respecting the Attorney General’s advice to refrain from making statements that could influence the legal proceedings.
Anwar urged lawmakers to respect the judicial institution and avoid comments that could undermine its integrity.
Dr. Wee, however, criticized this approach, asserting that Malaysians trust the judiciary's independence and are merely seeking factual clarity. "All we want to know is whether the royal addendum exists. If yes, say yes; if no, say no," he reiterated.
In his video, Dr. Wee underscored the importance of transparency in governance, particularly when addressing matters of public interest. He questioned why a straightforward query has been met with what he described as evasive responses, and he called on the government to foster trust by being forthright with the people.
As the January hearing approaches, the debate over the rumored royal addendum continues to dominate public discourse. For many Malaysians, the issue symbolizes a broader demand for accountability and openness from their leaders. Whether or not the Prime Minister provides the clarity sought by Dr. Wee and others, the outcome of Najib's appeal is poised to have significant political and legal ramifications.
