Kota Kinabalu: Some 63 participants competed in the Api-Api Arm Wrestling Championship 2026, which concluded at MaiYai Thai Waterfront here on Saturday.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Api-Api Division, organised the championship featuring three categories — Amateur, Below 85kg and Above 85kg — bringing arm wrestling enthusiasts from different backgrounds to showcase their strength, determination and sportsmanship while promoting healthy competition and community engagement.
LDP Central Vice President and N.20 LDP Api-Api Division Chairman, Sim Fui, who officiated the event, said the strong participation reflected high interest of locals in arm wrestling, which should be fully supported and expand its potential.
He said he hoped the championship would become a regular sporting event in Api-Api, attracting more participants and providing local athletes with opportunities to develop their talents.
He also congratulated all winners and participants for their outstanding performances and competitive spirit.
“In the Amateur category, Addy Edward emerged champion, followed by Jerry in second place and Shahriza Tapi in third. Joffey Jolly won the Below 85kg category, with Juan Gary finishing runner-up and Lan Fariza secured third.
“In the Above 85kg category, Calveen Petrus took the title, followed by Gregory and Bradley Chang in second and third places respectively,” he said to Daily Express here on Sunday.
Sim said sporting activities could bring communities together, promote healthy lifestyles and encourage young people to reach their potential.
“Sports are not merely about winning medals. They provide an important platform to develop discipline, perseverance, friendship and unity, particularly among our younger generation,” he said.
He also commended organising chairmen Arthur Mojugah, the division’s publicity chief and Alvin Lee, the Youth division chief together with the organising committee, for their efforts in ensuring the event’s success.
He thanked LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin and Datuk Chok Yun Kiong of a private company for sponsoring the championship, as well as members of the party’s Supreme Council, the Api-Api division committee and party members for their support.
“Through sports, we can bring communities together, encourage positive lifestyles and inspire young people to pursue their potential. We hope to see an even bigger and more exciting championship in the coming years,” Sim said.
