- A new study by the American Heart Association (AHA) has investigated the impact of caffeine consumption on adult heart health.
- The research, published in AHA Journals, suggests “most adults can safely consume up to five 8-ounce cups of regular black caffeinated coffee per day”, and this amount of consumption may even be associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
- However, high doses of caffeine, such as from energy drinks or energy shots, can cause a significant increase in blood pressure and a risk of abnormal heart rhythms.
- A typical cup of coffee tends to contain 9.5mg to 20.6mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, whereas some energy drink shots have 40mg to 69mg.
- Researchers say that caffeine response varies by individual factors like age, genetics, and health conditions.
