My wife and I do regular Plogging at Bukit Kiara Federal Park and Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara. Despite the activation of the Anti- Littering Law on 1 January 2026, the amount of rubbish and recyclables we collect has not reduced. It seems that there is more of it and is depressing that the law has little effect.

Some clarity on what constitutes littering may help with reducing the litter.

Despite warning signs against feeding the monkeys , it is blatantly ignored. Obviously, the plastic bags, containers, waxed papers, cutlery and wrappers are litter.

Bananas, rambutans, oranges, and even durians are commonly fed to the monkeys and skins are left on the park grounds after the monkeys have eaten.

Hashers leave pieces of paper for other runners to follow and these are almost always left behind on the trails to rot over time .

Grass cutters leave behind the yellow plastic cutting wires in the grass when it slips off from their moving machines. It is never ever picked up and disposed of properly.

The authorities must clarify if the above three items when thrown and left at public places are litter.

This will help in better understanding of the law and reduce littering. Whatever the outcome , it will mitigate disputes if a situation with any of these items arises.

Signs on the newly enacted law and its penalties may make some apprehensive and reduce littering but regular appearance of enforcement officers will definitely have an impact. These signs should include descriptions of items which are deemed litter.

Such signs must be placed at many spots, especially at the entrances so that there is little or no excuse for those who claim ignorance when caught littering.
