Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has raised concern that a concept he initially proposed to foster unity among Malays is now having the opposite effect, as competing groups adopt and replicate the idea for their own political agendas.

In a new blog post, Mahathir reflected on the evolution of the Big Umbrella” concept — an initiative intended to gather Malays under a single platform to strengthen political cohesion. He noted that while the idea initially received broad support from leaders and ordinary Malays alike, its implementation has taken an unintended turn.

According to Mahathir, once political leaders began embracing the proposal, several different groups started setting up their own versions of the “Big Umbrella.” Instead of unifying Malays under a common vision, four or five separate umbrella movements have now emerged, each claiming to champion Malay solidarity.

Campaigns were launched to attract supporters to these new platforms, but Mahathir observed that Malays are now forced to choose between multiple umbrellas. This competition has effectively split the community into rival camps, repeating the same pattern seen in the proliferation of Malay-based political parties over the years.

He suggested that the creation of multiple umbrellas has diluted the original purpose, leaving many of them half-empty and unable to genuinely strengthen the community. Rather than producing a unified front, the movement has resulted in greater fragmentation, as supporters scatter across different leaders and initiatives.

Mahathir argued that the outcome demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding or misapplication of the concept. The very solution intended to consolidate power and representation has become a fresh source of division — a development he described as both ironic and concerning.

He urged Malays to reflect critically on how the concept has been adopted, suggesting that something had gone wrong in its acceptance and execution. Instead of simply multiplying platforms, he implied that true unity would require genuine collaboration and a shared commitment to a single collective struggle.

Mahathir concluded by calling for introspection among Malays, stressing that the community must rethink its approach if it hopes to overcome longstanding political splits. Without a clear correction, he warned, efforts to strengthen Malay unity may continue to be undermined by competing interests operating under the guise of unity movements.
